Morgantown Street, Fairchance, PA 15436.

Maintenance of Cemetery Grounds

SS. Cyril & Methodius Church provides:

  • Cutting of grass and trimming of weeds twice a month (weather permitting).

  • Removal of funeral flowers placed on the graves of newly deceased.

  • Placing of top soil and planting of grass seed on the graves of newly deceased.

  • Spring clean-up during the week of March 15 (weather permitting).

  • Fall clean-up during the week of September 15 (weather permitting).

Note:  SS. Cyril & Methodius Church and their clean-up crew are not responsible for any items left on the graves immediately prior to the clean-up dates. SS. Cyril & Methodius Church is also not responsible for the placing of flags on the graves of Veterans.  This is done by local veteran organizations at their discretion.

  • Benches: No benches may be placed on or near any burial plot in St. Joseph Cemetery as of September 2013.  SS. Cyril & Methodius does honor the permissions given prior to that date, but no new benches may be added as they create an opportunity for damage and/or injury during routine maintenance.

  • Planting of annual flowers: Permitted in the approved area only (i.e., up to 12 inches in front of memorial and no wider than the memorial).

  • Planting of perennials: No perennial flowers, plants, potted plants, trees, or shrubs are permitted.  SS. Cyril & Methodius Church reserves the right to remove any items, including trees, plants, potted plants, shrubs, or perennial flowers that become overgrown or are troublesome to the maintenance of St. Joseph Cemetery.

  • Artificial flowers are permitted in the approved area only (i.e., up to 12 inches in front of memorial and no wider than the memorial).

  • Cut or artificial flowers  are permitted in approved vases that are permanently attached to markers.

  • Statues and Candles are permitted but must be placed in the approved area only (i.e., up to 12 inches in front of the memorial and no wider than the memorial).  No items are to be placed on the center of the graves, even if there is a marker for cremains).  The church is not responsible for broken glass votives.

  • Flags and flag holders:  Permitted in the approved area only (i.e., up to 12 inches in front of the memorial and no wider than the memorial).

  • Maintenance:  Other than the 12 inches in front of memorials and the width of memorials, all cemetery maintenance is the responsibility of the cemetery or contractors hired by the cemetery (i.e., others are not permitted to cut any grass on the cemetery property.  The cemetery is not insured for these activities.)

  • Decorative stones, marble chips, glass, plastic, paper objects, toys, etc:  These items are prohibited as they present a safety hazard.  Equipment can throw off these items (or broken pieces thereof) and the men operating the grass-cutting equipment, as well as visitors, could be injured.  These can also damage headstones or scratch bronze markers.  NOTE:  Temporary plastic objects hurt the ecology, as well as adding cost to the cemetery for the disposal of these items.

  • Fencing, borders or edging (including wood, iron, concrete, bricks, rope, or wire):   These items are prohibited as they create a maintenance hazard.  These items make it difficult for grass-cutting equipment to pass freely between the headstones and over the graves.  Furthermore, when these items are covered by snow and are not visible, they can be damaged by the equipment, or they can cause damage to the equipment's tires, and flush markers can be scratched.

  • Objects that are unsightly or detract from the spiritual setting of a Catholic cemetery are prohibited.

  • Foundations are not to be installed by family members.

  • Drive only on the paved roadway.  Do not drive on grassy areas.

  • Pets, trail vehicles and loitering are prohibited in the cemetery.

  • Littering and dumping are prohibited in the cemetery.

  • The cemetery assumes no responsibility for anything placed at the grave or crypt site.

  •  In the winter months, the cemetery roads are cleared only when needed for burial access.  Plowing during heavy snow poses a risk of damage to the tombstones. Please honor and pray for your deceased loved ones at home during days of snow and inclement weather.

SS. Cyril & Methodius Church has the right to amend any and all regulations as the needs of the parish continue to evolve. For specific information, or have a question answered, please call the parish office at 724-437-3927.
